When is Black History Month?
The celebration of Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. Woodson chose that week specifically because it covered the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. It became a month-long celebration in 1976.
In addition to the United States, Black History Month is also celebrated in other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom. Canada celebrates also in February, whereas the UK focuses on Black History Month
