Rodolfo Hammersley was a Chilean all-round sportsman and optometrist. Rodolfo’s father was the Englishman Robert Hammersley Symens who founded the first opticians in Chile in Rodolfo Hammersley was born in Valparaíso in and continued with the family business when he opened a branch in Santiago.
In Hammersley ran seconds in the metres to equal the world record. He was selected to represent Chile in multiple events at the Stockholm Olympics but an injury prevented him from competing in most of them. Hammersley was able to start in the high jump and the standing high jump but failed to clear the minimum heights in each of the qualification rounds to advance further. Hammersley was listed to compete in the metres, metres, 4 × metres relay, long jump, standing long jump, triple jump, and pentathlon, but was unable to start in any of them.
At the first edition of the South American Championships in Athletics in Hammersley won gold in the discus throw and silver in the hammer. In between the two World Wars he served as a delegate for Chile at the Amsterdam Olympics and the Berlin Olympics.

Chile lays claim to being one of 14 nations to participate at the inaugural Summer Olympics and made its debut appearance at the Winter Olympics. The national teams sent by Chile to each of the Olympic Games have been under the auspices of the Chilean Olympic Committee since its inception in and acceptance by the International Olympic Committee. Previous to the establishment of the Chilean Olympic Committee, athletes were sent to the Olympics under the auspices of the Chilean Athletics Federation.
The athletes representing Chile at the Olympics have brought home a total of fifteen medals, with tennis as the top medal-producing sport. Chile has yet to win any medals at the Winter Olympics.
