Despite the rain and chill that greeted daylight on Sunday, October 5th, the "Einstein-Montefiore Sugar Sheriffs" fielded 44 of its 60 team members at the JDRF "Walk for a Cure," held at the Bronx Zoo. Anchored by a solid troop of second-year M.D. students, the Sugar Sheriffs braved the rain, which gave way to partly cloudy skies by the walk's start. Once registered and signed in, the team members joined the other walkers in listening to the opening remarks and doing some calisthenics.
Among the speakers was event co-chair and Sugar Sheriffs' team leader, Jill Crandall, M.D., who said, "Today, each of us, whether we are here with our family, friends, classmates or co-workers, are walking together to help raise funds for diabetes research. We are helping to cure this disease."
Dr. Crandall, who is associate professor of medicine at Einstein and an attending physician at the Montefiore Diabetes Clinic, also serves as director of the Diabetes Clinical Trials Unit and as a principal investigator for several NIH-funded clinical studies, including the Diabetes Prevention Program � Outcome Study (DPP-OS), the Epidemiology of Diabetes Control and Complications (EDIC) study and the Type 1 Diabetes Genetics Consortium.
