Far from the madding crowd, amidst the serenity of bountiful nature, contemporary theatre in West Bengal is looking out for newer idioms. Tepantar Natyagram, a picturesque theatre destination located at a stone’s throw from the river, Ajay, at the border of West Burdwan and Birbhum, is fast emerging as a destination where innovative ideas may take root and performances can be held in both open and closed spaces. Kalindi Natyasrijan, a theatre group from the northern fringes of Calcutta, organized Golpo Gathay Natya Mela 2022 (January 26-29) at Tepantar’s black box theatre facility. Besides two recent productions by the hosts, the festival offered selected works from the districts, including Pratham Juto Pora (Agami Pragatishil Natya Sanstha from Barjora, Bankura), Na Hanyate (Atmaja from Suri, Birbhum), Macbeth (Phoenix from Malda), Aabru (Souvik Sanskritik Chakra from Dakshineswar), Neel Piritir Phul (Ebong Amra from Satkahania, West Burdwan). Revealed: Shakespeare’s Dark Lady was a prostitute
The Dark Lady who inspired some of William Shakespeare’s romantic sonnets may have had a rather unladylike profession, as experts suggest that she may have been a notorious prostitute called ‘Lucy Negro’ or ‘Black Luce,’ who ran a brothel in Clerkenwell, London.
Shakespeare scholar Dr Duncan Salkeld said that he had unearthed documents which indicate that she is “the foremost candidate for the dubious role of the Dark Lady.”
Many of the sonnets 127 to 152 are addressed to an unidentified woman with whom Shakespare imagines having an affair.
In Sonnet 144 the temptress is referred to as “my female evil” and “my bad angel.”
The identity of the Dark Lady has mystified academics for years.
To her contemporaries, she was known as “an arrant whore and a bawde,” catering for everyone from “ingraunts” (immigrants) to “welthyemen” and the aristocracy.
The sonnets give few details describing her, apart from her dark eyes, hair and complexion, with hints that she was married.
According to the Independent, this identity was tentatively suggested in the 1930s but Dr Salkeld has now found public records that convince him that she is “the foremost candidate for the dubious role of the Dark Lady.”
