Russian polymath Mikhail Vasilievich Lomonosov () is rightfully called the Father of Russian science for many reasons, including his tireless promotion of Enlightenment ideas, his outstanding contributions to the natural sciences, and his establishment of Moscow University. But Lomonosov (fig.1) was also remarkable for his ability to conduct science in a climate in which it was not yet culturally recognized as significant, and then to promote it in politically turbulent times.
