Since we are in September I believe that it’s only appropriate to talk about Hispanic fashion designers since this is Hispanic Heritage month. As many of you know I am hispanic myself and I first started this Introduction series to shed light on black fashion designers/ people in the fashion industry that you should know. But I would also like to expand it.
Now I know Oscar de la Renta is actually a major designer that many know so I feel like this introduction will be quite easy for some. Born on July 22nd, 1932 in Santo Domingo. Named Oscar Aristide Renta Fiallo, he was the youngest of seven children and the only boy. He had a Dominican mother named Carmen Maria Antonia and a Puerto Rican father named Oscar Avelino De La Renta who was the owner of an insurance company. His family from both mother and father side were very high class people who received a great education. For example, his uncle Luis Aristides Fiallo Cabral was a doctor, lawyer, and architect who received any degrees at the University of Santo Domingo could offer at the time. De la Renta’s great-great grandfather, from his father’s side, was even mayor for Ponce, Puerto Rico. He grew up in a protective Catholic family and lost his mother at 18.

Today I bring you Stella Nolasco, a Puerto Rican fashion designer. Most notably none for her show where she had a model walk down the runway with a sign that read “Can’t say American without the Rican”. This was the designers way to bring attention in 2018 after the devastation that was Hurricane Maria. Born in Aguadilla, another reason you may know her is for being the Costume designer of Nuestra Belleza Latina. Nolasco often takes inspiration from her own Puerto Rican culture which is something that I admire since my dream is to be a fashion designer as well. Her fashion idol is Valentino. Nolasco understands that to be a Hispanic fashion designer in a world that is dominated by the French and Italian houses she must make it in the United States. Now, sadly, it was very hard to find much information on her early life but I will introduce you to her as much as I can.
Nolasco obtain a Bachelors degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia. She went to study at SACI School for Art in Italy after being chosen to participate in fashion program.
